On 26 September 2026, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Reuters and Deutsche Welle described it as the first meeting between the two countries’ top diplomats since before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Why it matters
A direct channel can reduce misunderstanding and carry limited proposals, but a meeting is not an agreement.
