Chi
Chi, or qi, is the idea of vital flow at the heart of Chinese philosophy and Feng Shui.
How chi moves
In spatial practice, chi is described through patterns of approach, light, air, movement, activity, and rest. A direct rushing path may feel different from a gently unfolding entrance; a blocked room may feel different from one with clear circulation.
Sheng chi and sha chi
Traditional language distinguishes supportive, life-giving movement from harsh, stagnant, or disruptive movement. These terms guide observation rather than provide a physical measurement.
Practical reflection
Look for clear entrances, usable pathways, fresh air, appropriate light, and a balance between active and quiet areas. Changes should remain safe, functional, and suited to the people using the space.
